Located at the point where the Allegheny and
Monongahela Rivers merge to form the Ohio,
Pittsburgh is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, wooded

municipalities that comprise Allegheny County,
Pittsburgh occupies 55-1/2 of Allegheny County’s
730 - square mile area. Pittsburgh’s average elevation is
740 feet above sea level, and the average
elevation along the rivers is 702 feet. The highest point in
Allegheny County is 1,400 feet (Bethel Park).

The area enjoys a comfortable, moderate climate. The
average temperature is 60°F, with an average high of
83°F and average low of 34°F. Average annual
precipitation totals approximately 36 inches in the
Pittsburgh vicinity and 44 inches in the northwestern
areas of the county. Mean relative humidity varies from
80% at 7:00 a.m. to 57% at 1:00 p.m.
